BASIC ENGLISH CLASSES
Required registration begins January 3rd and ends January 31st
Free classes begin February 4th through April 12th and runs concurrently with a Family Literacy Program, that also requires registration. Adults do not have to have children in the family literacy program to attend the ESL class, but children must have a parent in the ESL class to be a part of the Family Literacy class. Only 25 students may enroll for the ESL class.

One of the best-loved classics of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has earned many dis-tinctions since its original publication in 1960. It has won the Pulitzer Prize, been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, and been made into an enormously popular movie. It was also named the best novel of the twentieth century by librarians across the country (Library Journal).

The book club meets the last Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Timberglen Branch auditorium at 18505 Midway Road (between Frankford and the Bush Turnpike). Books can be picked up or requested at the desk. New members are always welcome!

The Art Thief by Noah Charney

Dear American Airlines by Jonathan Miles

Bennie Ford, a fifty-three-year-old failed poet turned translator, is traveling to his estranged daughter’s wedding when his flight is canceled. The year is 1663, and the setting is Oxford, England, during the height of Restoration political intrigue. July 29th -The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
The daughter of a well connected bookseller is tapped to write a biography of a renowned English author whose previous biographical snapshots are entertaining stories at best. Set in the English countryside, Margaret Lea, the bookseller’s daughter and also the author of obscure biographies, finds herself visiting the scenes of her subject’s past, figuratively and literally, to decipher any truth hidden beneath the hubris of a master storyteller.

August 26th - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
An amazing tale of World War II Germany though the eyes of an unlikely narrator. The central character, an orphaned girl named Liesel, ekes out a rough childhood with her adopted parents, a foster mother who has a proclivity for swearing and a loving stepfather who teaches her how to read by use of paint and bare basement walls. Liesel struggles with the death of his little brother and the abandonment of her mother by risking her family’s livelihood by sneaking a book away from a Nazi book burning rally. With equal parts compassion and dark humor, Zusak creates a novel worth to be read by both young adults and adults alike.

September 30th - The World without Us by Alan Weisman
Weisman’s tells us what would happen if all human life were to be wiped out in a single moment and what would follow in our absence. In those successive moments after our freak departure, much of the infrastructure that we take for granted on a daily basis slow deteriorates without humans to fix them: roads and bridges are allowed to succumb and then nature begins to reclaim it’s natural habitat. An example Weisman discusses is a long buried stream will rise and follow its intended path through what was mid-town Manhattan.

October 28th - People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
With shades of Dan Brown’s knack in searching for missing books and mysterious artwork, this novel details the history of a lost illuminated Hebrew text from 15th Century Spain. Looking for the provenance of a valued object is a tedious job that rare book conservator, Hanna Heath, finds intriguing. Although the search for the books starts in 1940 Sarajevo, the story ends during the last vestiges of Convivencia in Sevilla, Spain in the late 15th Century. A notion the author hopes to employ here is that the three main Middle Eastern based religions (Judaism, Islam & Christianity) can live in relative ease as they did several centuries ago.

November 25th - The Faithful Spy by Alex Bereson
Two years after U.S. secret agent John Wells infiltrates al-Qaeda, the events of 9/11 call into question his usefulness, if not his loyalty, but he keeps his cover and bides his time, burrowing closer to Osama while sincerely converting to the one true faith of Islam as the years slip by. When al-Zawahiri sends him home at last, it is to serve some undetermined role in a major, multiphase offensive cleverly designed to strike terror in the American heart by unleashing conventional, biological, and nuclear attacks from coast to coast.

December 30th - The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
A delightful mixture of artwork and narration welcome the reader to a fantastic story about a young man living in a busy train station in Paris, France. His story of being orphaned by his clockmaker father and the adjustments he’s had to endure make for a fascinating storyline. Those seeking to read a typical book will get an eyeful of original drawings that blend the illustrative elements of a graphic novel and the intrigue of a page turner. It is an innovative book to say the least.

Starlight Stories at Timberglen

Starlight Stories is a family literacy program which brings a small group of families together in a supportive environment as they all improve their reading skills. This program combines a multicultural storytime in english and spanish and a craft where the families together create a book to tell their story. Each family takes home a book of stories that they can use to read out loud together and each child receives his or her own book based on the age level. There will be two more Starlight Story programs beginning in February. If you are interested in participating, please contact Joanne at 214-671-1365. This program is sponsored by Target and the Timberglen Branch Library Friends.

Timberglen Holiday Hours

The Timberglen Branch will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve, December 24th and be closed all Christmas Day, December 25th. The branch will resume regular hours until New Year's Eve, when the branch will close at 5pm, and remain closed New Year's Day, January 1, 2008. Happy Holidays to everyone!

Halloween at Timberglen!

Another successful holiday celebrated at the Timberglen Branch, this time a spoooooky story time in honor of Halloween. Children's Librarian Miss Joanne had well over 30 children and their parents enjoy stories and treats along with our spooky guests, Friends Board Members Bearded Jack and Cowboy Jim. Kids also enjoyed making spiders with their crinkly paper legs. Another good time at the library was had by all!

September 25th: Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas

Rennie Stroud looks back to 1942, when she was 13, to tell a powerful coming-of-age story. That year, the U.S. government opened a Japanese internment camp outside Ellis, CO, less than a mile from where Rennie and her family farmed sugar beets. Rennie observes the prejudice of some of the townspeople as well as her parents' strong moral code and their entanglement in the emotions of the time. When a young girl is murdered, suspicion naturally turns to the camp, and the town is divided by fear.

October 30th: The River King by Alice Hoffman
The Hadden School, an elite private school on the banks of the Hadden River, has had a very checkered past since it was built in 1858. No child from the town has ever been admitted and the Hadden students and townies never mix. When a student, August Pierce is found dead, floating in the Hadden River, both worlds come crashing together. His investigation into possible foul play begins to unravel the secret lives of both the students and town residents.

November 27th: Water for Elephants By Sara Gruen

When 23-year-old Jacob Jankowski learns that his parents have been killed in a car crash, leaving him penniless, he drops out of Cornell veterinary school and parlays his expertise with animals into a job with the circus, where he cares for a menagerie of exotic creatures.

The release of the 7th and last in the Harry Potter series...Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was celebrated by over a 100 people at the Timberglen Branch on Saturday, July 21! While they may have been listening to JK herself at the History Museum in London at midnight, the Timberglen neighborhood was getting beauty rest for the biggest celebration at the branch since opening day.

Children entered the Hogwarts Dining Hall (a.k.a. the auditorium) after being assisted by Professor Snape and the Sorting Hat to their chosen house. Ravenclaws, Hufflepuffs, Gryffindors and Slytherins were sitting with their housemates dining on a feast of Dragon Biscuits, Humbugs and Pumpkins Juice. Candles hung around highlighting the artwork of the Fat Lady among others. Students had the opportunity to win copies of past Harry Potter books as well as glow in the dark glasses, 7 tattoos and 072107 keychains. After a hearty breakfast, students made owls out of feathers and bags since many forgot to bring their own. Once the magical craft had been completed, children bustled throughout the library looking for dragon eggs. They returned to the auditorium to have their pictures taken and pick up all their prizes.

Harry Potter brings everyone out once again. Readers are Leaders and are celebrated at the Timberglen Branch Library!

Summer Reading started TODAY! Timberglen Branch has an exciting and busy lineup ahead. We are looking for volunteers to sign up to assist with the program and refreshments for each weekly program. Even if you are not available on these days but would still like to volunteer, please let me know. We can use additional assistance with checking in kids and handing out prizes all throughout the summer. Any time you may be able to give--even outside of these dates and times-- would be appreciated.

We are also looking for any assistance with refreshments. Passing the Written DMV Presentation
Wednesday, June 6th, 4:00 p.m.
This program can serve both as training for beginning drivers and as a refresher course for more experienced drivers. Using the Department of Motor Vehicles handbooks from throughout the country as the base, the creators of this program have developed an informative, easy to understand training course for viewers who need to pass the dreaded "written test" to get, or renew, their driver's license.

Mayor's Summer Reading Program Kickoff

Readers are Leaders! Come join us at Timberglen where Teens will sign up for the Summer Reading Program in the classroom. Just for signing up, all teens will be entered into a drawing for a special prize! This sign up will also kick off the Young Adult Book Club. The first selection will be “October Sky” by Homer Hickam and the first ten teens to sign up will get a copy to keep! The first book club meeting will be on Wednesday, June 13th at 12:30 p.m. for a Brown Bag Book Discussion. Bring your brown bag lunch and we’ll provide beverages. We will discuss this book and vote on our next selection.

Spring Fling at Timberglen

Nearly 100 children and their families attended the Spring Fling storytime and party event on April 7th. Children's Librarian JoAnne Mitchell put on a great and energetic story time and also helped the children make a craft prior to letting the children into the library for an egg hunt! Colorful plastic eggs were hidden throughout the library and all children had fun searching for them. What a way to celebrate Spring!

On Midway and Timberglen Roads, north of Frankford Road.

Located in northwest Dallas on Midway Road just south of the George Bush Turnpike, the Timberglen Branch is one of the newest editions to the Dallas Public Library system. The building is over 18,000 square feet and is located next to the Timberglen Recreation Center and features many energy saving qualities.

The kinetic sculpture On The Wind located in front of the building was designed by David B. Hickman specifically for the library. Visually, the work has imagery relative to the library in the form of two open books merging with CD’s. The work also provides a shaded area for quiet reflection or reading. The sculpture acknowledges the green building concept by using wind power to provide the circular movement as well as the presentation of key words to reinforce the ideas of learning and conservation.

Children's Programs
Pre-school storytimes for children and their parents or caregivers take place on Mondays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium.

Library Live brings multicultural programs to the libraries and programs are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. All ages are invited!

Adult Programs
The Timberglen Branch Book Club will mee tthe last Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The inaugural meeting will take place on April 24th and the selection will be Plainsong by Kent Haruf.

Poetry in the Glen is a program for those who want to share their poetry and talk about poetry. It will be held every third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. beginning May 15th.
